ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S ELECTION IN 1860 WASN’T THE MAIN REASON FOR SECESSION
All reason why secession happened is because of the Southern group. The presidential election of United States which took place in 1860 set the phase for the America Civil War. For along duration, the United States had some differences especially in 1850s on about the slavery and states’ rights. However, in 1860 this issue became worse, where the former dominant Democratic Party was fractured into Southern and the Northern groups, bringing Republican Party into power with its leader Abraham Lincoln, but this was done without any aid from the Southern state. One month later, after Lincoln’s victory, there was an announcement of secession by the South Carolina and other states, but it was rejected and referred as illegal by the current president who was in power by then, President James Buchanan and elected President Abraham Lincoln. The Southern group wasn’t happy with Compromises and Decisions which were made upon the slaves, they were afraid of Lincoln as he would abolished the slavery, they also didn’t want to lose power, and they wanted to hold slaves, since they were providing free labor.
The primary cause of secession was States’ rights. There were dissimilarities from both sides on constitution with John Adams as Federalist and Thomas Jefferson as Anti-Federalist and Alexander Hamilton (Luthin, Reinhard H. 2004). The constitution wanted to abolish slavery, but the Southern group was angry and very disappointed concerning the negotiations and the decision that were made regarding to slavery. Various political analysts argue that they wanted to escape from those Compromises and Decision, seeing as they didn’t wanted slavery to be abolished. For instance, the Dred Scott Decision, Compromise of 1820, Compromise of 1850, Kansas Nebraska Act, Three Fifths Compromise, Raid at Harpers Ferry, and Missouri Compromise among others more. These were some of the decisions and compromises that were made during the trial of the deal against disagreements regarding to slavery. (Nevins, Allan 2007)
Moreover, during the presidential election of the year 1860, the Southern leaders informed the South that if Lincoln wins the election, they will secede from the Union. A lot of historic data shows that, the main reason why Southern leaders were afraid of Lincoln is because they believed he was an abolitionist. Abolitionist peoples were against slavery, and they wanted to end slavery. The Southern people wanted the slavery trade to go ahead as they were benefiting a lot from slaves. The Southern leaders feared that they would lose their balance of power from the government. They wanted a balanced government (McPherson, James M. 2000)
From Nevins, Allan (2007), the Southern people were afraid that when Lincoln gets into the office, he might forbid slavery. This could have created a big problem to the South since they were depending from slaves (that’s free labor), and this could have stopped South from blossoming. Also, the Southern famers could have started to pay slaves, who worked in their farms. Conversely, the plantation owners wouldn’t make more profit compared to previous as they could start to pay for labor. In fact, the central reason why the Southern states seceded from the Union is because they wanted to escape what they saw as a danger to their right to possess slaves.
The President-elect Abraham Lincoln was fighting for slaves’ freedom, but the Southern states demanded for secession for its own benefit. The Southern states had various reasons for its own gain and that’s why they wanted secession. At initial, the Southern group wasn’t happy with Compromises and Decisions which were made upon the slaves, they were afraid of Lincoln as he would abolished the slavery, they also didn’t want to lose power, and they wanted to hold slaves, as they were providing free labor. When secession was declared by the Southern state, Lincoln’s said that it was illegal. Now it’s ironic to say that President Lincoln’s was the reason for secession, yet he didn’t sail in the same boat with it.
