Assessing Home Environment Case Study
A 45-year-old male presents to the emergency room via ambulance at the local hospital after a falling from a 17 foot extension ladder at a construction site. One of the workers called 911. Upon arrival to the accident site, the paramedics took precautions for head, neck and spinal injuries. On the way to the hospital, the paramedics evaluated the patient’s neurologic deficits and as they were transporting him to he became unconscious. The paramedics notified the receiving hospital of a possible traumatic brain injury.
Upon the wife’s arrival to the hospital, the ER nurse proceeds to gather the patient’s medical history. The patient is 5’11’’, 170lbs, has a history of smoking, but overall is in good health and very active. During the gathering of the patient’s medical history, the ER physician orders labs tests, CT scan which indicated there was no hemorrhage, however swelling of the brain tissue. The patient was placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit for further monitoring and treatment.
After several weeks in the hospital and rehab, the patient is discharged home with the following issues:
Difficulty with activities of daily living
Lives in a two story house built in 1945
Both entry ways into home have stairs
