Huckleberry Finn

Your midterm paper will be at least 1,000 words (try to keep it under 1200 words, though). It must conform to all of the paragraphing rules in Module 0. I′d like to see a standard five paragraph paper. If you use research, all references must be cited to your sources within the text of the paper, and it must have a fully documented Works Cited section (see MLA references information on Discussion Forum). No more than 15% of your paper can be taken or paraphrased from outside sources. Choose from these 3 Topics: Discuss the topic of lying in the novel. Some are used for noble purposes, such as the lies Huck tells to save Jim after he is captured, and others such as those told by the con men (duke and Dauphin) are to swindle people and cause harm. Discuss the types of lies told in the novel and speculate as to Twain’s motives. Choose three characters that Twain clearly does not admire in the novel. Discuss what makes each character unlikable. Devote a separate paragraph to each character. Discuss three recurring motifs (any idea, object, feeling, color, pattern, and so forth which repeats itself) in the novel. Give specifics. The overall American critical reaction to the publishing of The Adventures of Huck Finn in 1855 was summed up in one word: ″trash″. Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women and Little Men) said, ″If Mr. Clemens cannot think of anything better to tell our pure-minded lads and lassies, he had better stop writing for them.″ The Public Library Committee of Concord, Massachusetts excluded the book as ″a dangerous moral influence on the young.″ Defend or refute the position that the novel is indeed ″trash″ with evidence from the text to support your claim.
