OBJECTIVES The course assignment will enable the participant to:
Complete an assessment of their leadership potential and style.
Think about areas for change and growth (SWOT Analysis).
Plan their graduate school course selection.
Develop a realistic action plan for 2-5 years.
Start changing attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, actions, and perceptions.
Develop a career plan and road map with benchmarks to measure progress.
Use the strategic plan to achieve professional goals.
Prepare a resume.
Assess leadership competencies.
Meet with the instructor to discuss the development of the paper.
Conduct a personal self-assessment and evaluation during the semester based on course activities.
Use the results of this self-assessment to develop a professional and personal action plan for: 2.1 the next 12 months 2.2 1-2 years 2.3 3-5 years
The Strategic Action Plan will contain: 3.1 Vision 3.2 Personal mission statement 3.3 Goals 3.4 Measurable objectives 3.5 Time frames 3.6 Cost projections 3.7 Responsibility designation 3.8 Use SMART criteria to make sure objectives are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-framed. 3.9 Leadership Assessment 3.10 Competency Assessment
The Strategic Action Plan should address personal and professional areas related to leadership skills and development, career planning, life changes, etc.: 4.1 It must be an integrated plan, 4.2 There must be continuity of thought and action across objectives, 4.3 There must be quantitative and qualitative forecasting (measurement), 4.4 It must be realistic plan.
Each participant will develop and submit a Professional Resume containing: 5.1 Personal Data 5.2 Career Objective 5.3 Education 5.4 Special Training 5.5 Work History 5.6 Professional Organizations 5.7 Community Experience 5.8 Other sections as needed
The Personal /Professional Strategic Plan should consider areas such as physical and mental health, assessment of professional skills, leisure time, time management skills, stress management skills, areas for spiritual growth, refinement of leadership skills, social-interpersonal skills, family, financial goals, plans for future education, involvement with community organizations, professional organizations, exercise and fitness, nutrition and diet, environmental responsibility, creativity, life purpose and service, etc.
Conduct your own SWOT analysis; develop realistic and measurable objectives (SMART) to achieve stated goals; examine mentorship relationships; complete a needs assessment; explore strengths and weaknesses; think about personal career strategies; include fieldwork opportunities, etc.
Utilize a model for strategic thinking about your own career.
