UNDERSTANDING THE APPLICATION OF PRINCIPLES OF PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT WITH USERS OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
Task 3: LO3 Understand the application of principles of professional engagement with users
of health and social care
What you must do
You are part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in a health and social care setting The MDT consists
of nurses, social workers, managers, dieticians, care workers, police, etc. Every 6 months there is a
MDT meeting that is held to discuss the quality of care given to patients (i.e. review care plans; risk
assessment etc.) and also to highlight and raise any specific issues in any service users. Relatives
and advocates will also be present at the meeting. At this particular meeting your line manager has
asked you to present a report that will form the basis of understanding application of principles of
professional engagement with service users of health and social care.
The MDT discusses a 60-year-old male who is not eating and who is depressed and had been a
victim of abuse by his past carers. This service user is visually impaired, suffers from dementia and
has loss of motivation and often exhibits challenging behaviour.
3.1 In the first section of your report explain the nature of different professional relationships
that exist in the context of the case scenario in relation to the service user and also in health
and social care contexts. You can also support your answer from your own workplace
experience the different types of professional relationship that exist.
examples ; with the individual, their family and friends, Team members, line managers, workers in other agencies; right and responsibilities of users of service versus care workers and others; professional codes; trust; advocacy; empowerment
3.2 In the next section of your report you must evaluate personal effectiveness in promoting and
supporting the rights of the individual in the case scenario above. In this section to support
your answer , you could introduce models of support
examples medical health versus social model; individual benefit versus organisational benefit
3.3 Finally, in your report you must discuss ways to resolve issues encountered in professional
relationships. For example you may want to focus on the dilemmas and conflicts that may
arise in the case scenario. To support your answer you can also include dilemmas in your
own workplace and how they were resolved
examples Dilemmas ; risk, abuse, challenging behaviour, conflict, ethics, confidentiality versus disclosure, expectation changing overtime, conflicts between principles of good practice and values of others.
Own practice: roles eg meeting needs of users of service, providers of health and social care service, facilitators, advocate, advisers, counsellors, mentor
Barriers; miscommunications, different professional codes of practice, group cohesiveness personalities.
